Panicum virgatum Squaw

Panicum virgatum Squaw (Switchgrass)

Beautiful, neat clumps of upright green foliage, as the season progresses the foliage changes to hues of bright red and is especially colourful by Autumn. Flower stems appear during August and September composed of many tiny purple-green spikelets, they almost seem to float above the foliage and give a super effect.
There are all sorts of uses for this elegant grass, they look very effective in bold swathes with other shapes and sizes of grasses and make a good foil for many perennials in a sunny border. They would also make a fine specimen in a generously sized container.

Panicum Virgatum Squaw has a range of benefits for your garden, whether you are new to gardening or a seasoned professional. It is perfect for cutting down maintenance in your garden and providing graceful height and interest!

Panicum Squaw Grasses (Switchgrass) look wonderful at the back of a border, in a Mediterranean or prairie style garden, or as a feature in a large courtyard garden. They are incredibly striking in swathes along a sunny border, adding gentle elegance to your planting schemes and are also ideal for planting near ponds or streams.

Alternatively, you can plant your Panicum Virgatum Squaw with other ornamental grasses, with Rudbeckia and Verbena for a natural look, or at the back of a border with Campanula, Nepeta and Lychnis planted in front and amongst them

For best results with Panicum virgatum Squaw grasses (Switchgrass), plant them in full sun (though they will tolerate partial shade). Ensure you use fertile, moist, but well drained soil, (though they will tolerate drier soils once established).
