Viburnum Davidii

Viburnum davidii (David Viburnum)

A wonderful, versatile and easy to grow evergreen garden choice that is very popular, especially with garden designers. Viburnum davidii ground cover has a bushy, spreading habit with attractive deep green, leathery and glossy, elliptic leaves ridged with distinct veins. In May, flattened heads of clustered, tiny tubular white flowers appear on short, pinkish stems, followed by striking and unusual metallic, turquoise-blue berries that contrast beautifully with the stems that turn a deeper pinkish red – please note, the berries will only appear on female plants if there is a male plant nearby.

Evergreen, Viburnum davidii make a highly effective low growing ‘structure plant’ addition to the front of mixed beds and borders or woodland shadier areas. Highly effective as a weed supressing ground cover carpet if planted in groups, they will provide year-round interest. Try planting with contrasting colours of Heuchera, with Rudbeckia, or under taller Acers with Hosta and mixed dwarf grasses.

Viburnum davidii ground cover is evergreen and require very little maintenance beyond a slight haircut to maintain their naturally bushy, rounded shape. They will perform well in full sun, partially shaded or fully shaded locations. One thing they do require is moderately fertile, moist but well-drained soil until established, when they will tolerate slightly drier soil. They will not thrive in soil that becomes waterlogged so add grit and well-rotted organic matter to clay soils before planting.
