Abelia Kaleidoscope (Abelia x grandiflora Kaleidoscope)
As you might presume from the name this is a shrub of many colours, grown primarily for its decorative foliage that starts as green and bright yellow in Spring and gradually intensifies during the Summer months. During the Autumn as temperatures drop extra colouration of fiery orange and red start to appear giving a fascinating multicoloured display. In parallel with this show, a steady succession of tubular pink flushed white flowers are produced from June right through into Autumn, they are lightly fragrant and like all Abelia they are very popular with bees.
Abelia Kaleidoscope is a great plant for a mixed border, can be grown in containers or with such showy small foliage – can make for a very unusual small decorative hedge in a sunny spot. Abelia x grandiflora Kaleidoscope has been bred to be naturally compact and bushy growing to little over 100cm when mature, we would recommend them for hedges of between 40 and 75cm in height.
Abelia shrubs and hedges are best trimmed or pruned in late winter or early spring (before growth starts) as this will allow for flowers to develop later in the summer (Abelia flowers at the ends of the branches). However with such great foliage, the flowers could be largely sacrificed by trimming a little more frequently through the season to maintain a much more formal shape. Or of course have a more informal little hedge – and let it flower away all summer with just an annual trim – there is no right or wrong answer, only personal preference!
