The Myrobalan Plum (Prunus Cerasifera) is also commonly known as Cherry Plum, a member of the Rosaceae family, native to Europe and Asia and naturalised in the British Isles. It is a deciduous shrub or small tree with mid green foliage providing attractive edible yellow and red cherry plums in autumn.

Clothed with small white flowers on the dark grey bare branches from late winter into early spring it is one of the earliest flowering shrubs giving interest in the harsher months. The nectar from this early blossom is invaluable for insects in the earlier months of the year and the spherical edible cherry plums that follow in the autumn are a great for the birds. It is self fertile but can also be pollinated by other Prunus varieties.

Prunus cerasifera makes an excellent dense hedge on its own or in a mix of other species, creating a thick barrier of thorny twigs along with all its other attributes. It’s listed as a plant that is used today to prepare Bach flower remedies and is one of the ingredients in Dr Bach’s original ‘crisis formula’ which he put together for emergency use! Cherry plums would certainly make an excellent constituent of any foragers hedgerow and are included in our Edible Hedgerow Mix.

Myrobalan Plum is lovely as a small tree in its own right, as a hedge that can be maintained at heights of 120-240cm in height. It can be planted in a sheltered or exposed spot in moist but well drained soil but does require full sun. The best time to prune is after flowering

Our Myrobalan Plums are sold as a bare root plants and as such should be planted between the months of November and April when the plants are dormant. As with all our hedging plants, we recommend adding rootgrow mycorrhizal fungi at planting time and applying a good mulch after planting.

Prunus cerasifera is an easy and undemanding plant to care for. When grown as a hedge we recommend trimming anytime from August onwards but best carried out after you have harvested the cherry plums (or the birds have taken them).
