Buddleja Davidii Empire Blue is a delightfully showy variety of Buddleja with gracefully arching stems covered in elegant lance shaped emerald green leaves that turn golden in autumn before falling. The main attraction of this variety is its abundance of glamorous, headily scented vibrant violet-blue flowers with tiny golden centres on upright panicles that appear in summer and flower all the way through to autumn. You can further prolong the flowering period by deadheading throughout the summer. You will find bees and butterflies can’t get enough of the Davidii Empire Blue Buddleja – hence it being known as the ’Butterfly bush’! This was one of the first varieties that became commercially available in the late 1800’s and remains a popular gardeners favourite throughout the country today.

Further Information about Buddleja Davidii Empire Blue Shrubs
We recommend cutting back your Buddleja Davidii Empire Blue hard every March to around 3-4 buds. This will ensure every year you get a full, healthy and bushy plant with the maximum flowers. With its very hardy nature, you can plant in almost any location from full sun through to partial shade in any well drained soil. It will swiftly bush out due to its fast growing nature to around 250cm high and 150cm wide so an ideal planting location is at the back of your beds and borders. For a riot of colour for many months of the year you could plant with Buddleja Davidii Royal Red or Wisteria Lane – perfect for country cottage gardens! Buddleja tend to self-seed freely so you may find over time you have more than one plant for you and your pollinators to enjoy!
