Physocarpus Lady In Red Shrubs

Physocarpus opulifolius Lady In Red (Ninebark)

This beautifully coloured Ninebark has mahogany red young stems and brilliant wine red young foliage that darkens as it matures to mahogany red making for a very effective contrast. This darker colouration stays all season making this a perfect shrub to add colour and interest to all beds and borders, or as a very colourful hedge or screen.

In June the heads of white flowers appear almost as a bonus, tinged with just the slightest hint of pink, they develop into red berries that stay on the plant into Autumn.

Physocarpus opulifolius Lady in Red

Physocarpus or Ninebarks are deciduous shrubs, easy to grow and tough. they are suited to all soil types but do like good drainage. Because they tolerate a wide range of conditions this is a good shrub for more difficult areas such as banks or dry areas (once well established). They look great partnered with other colourful shrubs or mixed in a perennial border where the richly coloured foliage will fit with many colour schemes bringing interest and height to act as a foil for other smaller plants.

Physocarpus opulifolius Lady In Red may be grown as a beautifully coloured hedge, by planting 3 of our sturdy shrubs per metre the hedge should develop within a few seasons with just a little formative trimming to the sides, once the desired height (we recommend 100-150cm) is reached these low maintenance shrubs need a single trim after flowering in early Summer to keep them looking good.
