BERBERIS DARWINII-BERBERIS DARWINII HEDGE, BERBERIS DARWINII SHRUBS AND HEDGING PLANTS
Berberis Darwinii is a prickly fast growing evergreen shrub first discovered by Charles Darwin in South America during the voyage of the Beagle, one of many plants named in his honour. It is one of the very best ‘all round’ evergreen shrubs.
Darwins Barberry (Berberis Darwinii) in very thorny like all Berberis (-linkHGN/Berberis), the clusters of dark green leaves are similar in shape to those of Holly (-link HGN/Holly) only in miniature with the spines on the outer edge. The older leaves often take on rich hues of red especially in autumn.
Berberis Darwinii produces masses of bright orange scented flower racemes over an extended period during the spring months. In favourable growing conditions Berberis Darwinii shrubs can often produce a second flush in autumn. The fruits or Barberries mature from green to a purple – blue colour, they are edible with a sharp acidic flavour.
Berberis Darwinii is a tough versatile all rounder that will grow happily in any reasonable soil including clay and chalk, provided it does not become waterlogged. It thrives in partial shade and is a reliable plant for coastal gardens.
As a back of border shrub Berberis Darwinii will grow into a rounded upright shrub up to 10ft (3m) in height. A Berberis Darwinii hedge when trimmed annually after flowering grows into a formidable dense prickly thicket. It makes an excellent intruder proof boundary and can be maintained at any height from 3-8ft (0.9-2.4m). Berberis Darwainii is reasonably fast growing at 1ft (30cm) or more per year.
The size of plants used for a new Berberis Darwinii hedge is really a matter of patience and budget, almost regardless of height when planted we recommend planting at a spacing of 18inches (45cm) apart for a dense impenetrable barrier.
