Betula Pendula ‘Youngii’ can be grown in a pot, as long as it’s big enough for the roots to grow. The tree will need good drainage, so choose a large container with holes in the bottom and a good quality compost. To keep the tree thriving, it will need repotting every two to three years as it grows. This is the perfect tree for a small garden.
Pruning the Young’s Weeping Birch will help the tree to thrive and maintain the ‘weeping’ shape. It only needs a light pruning during late winter or early spring, before the leaf buds appear. Removed any dead, diseased or damaged material plus any growing outside of the weeping shape. Use clean, sharp tools to avoid damaging the tree.Â

Young’s Weeping Birch is a hardy tree with very few problems, but it is wise to keep an eye out for fungal infections such as leaf spot, aphids and root rot. These can mostly be avoided by keeping the soil moist but well drained, allowing plenty of air flow through the tree, and removing any infected leaves as soon as you see any signs of problems.
When planting Young’s Weeping Birch, ensure it is in a full-sun position and well drained soil. If you need to improve the structure of the soil, add lots of well rotted organic matter. The tree can grow in partial shade, but full sun is preferable. Water well after planting and during dry spells (but overwatering can lead to root rot so be careful of this). Mulch around the base to suppress weeds. The same advice applies to other birch species, including Betula Pendula Royal Frost.
Betula Pendula ‘Youngii’ Growth Rate and Height
Weeping Birch grows between 30 to 60cm annually when growing in good conditions and can grow to about 8m high and 8m wide if given enough space. Because of the weeding habit of the branches, it looks magical in any size garden. Visit our Choosing the Right Hedge resource base to learn all about slow, medium and fast-growing plants.
