Black Mulberry Morus Nigra Garden Trees

Morus nigra (Black Mulberry)

Black mulberry is a medium-sized gnarly tree with dark green heart-shaped leaves and small clustered fluffy white blossoms from May to June. Prized for its delicious sweet fruit, berries ripen from white, to red then black and rarely ripen at the same time so you’ll have to harvest daily or gather fallen berries from the grass. Mulberries don’t keep well so are best eaten fresh. Interestingly, back in 1609, James I encouraged the import of Black mulberry saplings and seeds in the hope of establishing silkworm plantations at a time when silk was worth more than gold. His plans for dominating the lucrative silk trades of France and Italy were scuppered on realising that silkworms preferred feeding on Morus alba,  the white mulberry.

Morus nigra

Happy and hardy in any decent well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade, Black mulberries are a more unusual berrying tree with delicious, soft fruit. Mostly trouble-free and low-maintenance, Black mulberry has generous berry crops, ideal for making delicious jam, juice and pies. A more unusual choice for cottage, country and wildlife gardens and self-sufficient homesteaders. Smaller varieties can be espaliered against sunny walls. 8-10m x 8m

The Black Mulberry tree (Morus nigra) is an outstanding and highly ornamental fruiting tree. A mature Black Mulberry Tree makes a real garden centrepiece with its rounded head and attractive gnarled bark. The bright green heart shaped leaves have a serrated looking edge, with a distinct hairy underside that turns to a glorious yellow in Autumn. The fruits are around 3cm in length, red and black in colour, ready for harvest in September. The small spikes of yellow and green blossom appear in May. Grown on their own rootstock, the tree could mature to a height 8 metres.Black Mulberry trees are self fertile, a second mulberry tree is not required for pollination. Mulberry trees are grown on their own roots (not grafted) and will slowly grow to a height of 5-10 metres.

The Mulberry was brought into the country by the romans, the fruits have a slightly acidic, tart flavour, but can be eaten as fresh fruit from the tree or used for culinary purposes including Jams, jellies and Wine. The tradition is to shake the Mulberry tree and collect the fruits from the ground, the fruits can heavily stain the hands if picked by hand.

A Black Mulberry Tree makes a great addition to a garden – both beautiful and productive, and the versatile fruits do have a certain exclusivity, they don’t travel well and so you are very unlikely to ever see them in a supermarket!

When planting a young Mulberry we always recommend using rootgrow to give it the very best start in your garden.

Plant our young potted trees at any time,  in full sun or part shade in any decent well-drained soil. Avoid planting when the ground is excessively wet or frozen. Remember, trees normally reach their ultimate height and spread within 20-50 years depending on species so give it ample growing room.

A lovely problem-free deciduous tree that needs little pruning but you can tidy them up in February or March if needed by removing any unwanted crossed branches or dead, damaged or diseased stems.
