Juglans regia is also known as the English walnut. It’s a large deciduous tree that produces edible walnuts that can be used in your kitchen for cooking and baking and also provides benefits to wildlife. The wood from Juglans regia is often used in carpentry, creating many products for the home.
Juglans regia extract is taken from most parts of the tree, including the bark, leaves and roots and is then used in medicines and health products such as in skincare and supplements. The natural compound is anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial and has antioxidant properties as well. Laurel shrubs also have similar benefits.
Juglans regia slows down with growth as it matures, but in the first few years it has a moderately fast growth rate of 30 to 60cm per year in good conditions and can grow up to 30m tall in 20 to 50 years with a stunning canopy of pretty leaves and green fruits which will ripen to be walnuts for harvesting. Ideally, it grows in moist, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade with an annual prune. It may take some years before fruit develops, but it will be worth the wait.
Rest assured, we don’t sell any banned plants in the UK, so the answer is no – Juglans regia is not banned in this country. In fact, it is widely grown for wildlife, walnuts and wood. The extract is banned in some countries due to toxicity fears of the juglone compound. It is always wise to do your research and due diligence before planting anything new in your garden.

English Walnut (Juglans regia
We hope you might consider finding the space to accommodate the majesty of an English walnut, if you are thinking of planting a heritage tree, you could do no better. Typically, walnut trees have short trunks and wide canopies because all their strength goes into making sturdy branches to support the weight of nut crops. You’ll have to be patient for this gentle giant to attain a mature girth to harvest walnuts, but once planted you’ll have a tree for life and one that future generations can enjoy. Clothed in mid-green tapering smooth-edged leaves that drip with lime-green catkins from May to June and curious white fluffy female flowers that resemble miniature green vases. As leaves brown and fall in autumn, plum-sized green-skinned fruits swell encasing delicious wrinkled walnuts.
