Cortaderia Grasses

Cortaderia (Pampas Grass)

Cortaderia grasses are densely tufted, tall and clump-forming evergreen grasses.  Wonderfully popular, and with good reason! Rising to 300cm high and 180cm or more wide, depending on the variety, these elegant giants have gracefully arching, sharply toothed, blue-green leaves, topped in late Summer and early Autumn with long erect stems carrying pyramidal to oblong shaped plumes of glistening silver-white spikelets up to 90cm long and often flushed with pink or purple.

Cortaderia (Pampas Grass) grasses are a superb addition to a sunny location in the garden. Delivering their beautiful plumes from late Summer, they will add statuesque elegance to your planting schemes and are ideal for creating a show stopping focal point. Plant with other ornamental grasses, or with Dogwood to enjoy the coloured stems with your Cortaderia as a backdrop. Also wonderful as part of a dried flower arrangement.

For best results with Cortaderia, plant them in full sun in fertile, moist, but well drained soil enriched with lots of organic matter, which holds plenty of moisture in spring and summer.  Cut and comb out the last year’s flower stems and dead leaves in late winter or early spring (it is a good idea to wear gloves as protection from the leaf edges which can be sharp). Divide congested plants in Spring.
