Stipa
These are an indispensible family of grasses for the garden designer, Stipa calamagrostis is a very showy yet modestly sized plant. The Giant Oat Grass (Stipa gigantea) has to be one of the most handsome and tall varieties and the graceful Stipa tenuissima Pony Tails is just perfect for introducing movement into a herbaceous border making a perfect foil for their strong colours.
All Stipa varieties are easy plants to establish, they prefer full sun (Stipa gigantea will take a touch of shade) and well drained soil.
