Elaeagnus ebbingei Viveleg. (Oleaster)

A great recent introduction, this is a compact and bushy variegated type of Elaeagnus. The leaves have a large silvery green in the centre, edged with bright gold. It is similar to other variegated types however the centre of the leaf is darker giving a much more striking effect. The young leaves are silvery at first, the leaf colouration gradually appearing and intensifying as they new leaves mature. If you look closely at a mature plant in Autumn you will see the small creamy white fragrant flowers, and also that the silvery underside of the leaves have small scales on them – this is perfectly normal on all Elaeagnus and not a pest or disease!

Elaeagnus Viveleg is a naturally dense and bushy shrub, if untrmmed it will grow into a vase shape over time. This is a colurful evergreen is perfect for bringing enduring year round structure to shrub beds and borders. It also responds very well to trimming so makes a good, dense evergreen hedge or screen of 120-200cm in height, either on a boundary or inside the garden.

Elaeagnus ebbingei Viveleg are suitable for growing in sun or shade, as with most variegated plants the leaf colouration is at its best in full sun. Any normal soil is suitable provided it doesnt sit too wet and waterlogged in Winter. These are hardy plants well suited to windy and exposed situations, especially by the sea where they are untouched by the relentless salt laden Winter winds. A little shelter may be needed inland on very cold sites, but in most instances this is a great screening plant.
