With pink flowers blooming all the way through from early summer to October, Escallonia ‘Donard Seedling’ plants can grow to a mature height of 3m with a growth rate of up to 45cm per year. All Escallonia plants will thrive in well drained soil with full sun and ideally some shelter from windy conditions. Needing moist but well drained soil, Escallonia provide aesthetically pleasing flowers in colours from white to red and ‘Donard Seedling’ sits right in the middle of that colour scale and is a wonderful addition to any garden. Growing a range of various colour Escallonia will make for a stunning hedge. Try planting ‘Donard Seedling’ with others such as Escallonia ‘Apple Blossom’, ‘Pink Elle’ and ‘Crimson Spire’
Escallonia can be planted in any well drained soil in a sunny position. A sheltered position will benefit Escallonia but they do grow well in exposed sites, such as by the coast as well, although up against a wall is preferable. Dig a hole larger than the size of the rootball or container size and plant into the hole with the top of the rootball level with the surrounding soil, then backfill with soil, firm down and water in well. Mulching the surface but not up to the stem, is helpful to provide nutrients, suppress weeds and retain moisture. To grow as a hedge, plants should be spaced at 3-4 plants per metre.
During the first growing season, make sure newly planted Escallonia plants are thoroughly watered at least twice a week. They are very low maintenance and need little pruning, apart from once a year after flowering to keep in shape and remove any dead, diseased or damaged stems. After pruning, apply a mulch of well rotted organic matter over the rootball area, avoiding the stem
