The Hydrangea or Hortensia as it is occasionally called is native to all of eastern and southern Asia and the Americas. The large flowerheads make an impressive display with their stunning bright powder blue with a white centre rounded blooms which appear in early summer and can last right through to late summer.

This dramatic and impressive looking large shrub is deciduous but this does not detract from the impact this plant can make in a garden during the summer when planted in full sun and a sheltered spot. To keep the bold and impressive Blue colour of this Mophead variety aluminium must be present in the soil if adding aluminium do apply with caution to avoid burning or damaging the root systems. To lower the ph level allowing the aluminium to do its work adding grass clippings, coffee grounds or vegetable and fruit peelings to the area around the plant is the favoured organic, method. Hydrangea hedges can also be grown in large planters or pots making controlling the colour a little easier. This impressive shrub can grow to 150cm.

Blue Flowered Hydrangea information – the colour of the flowers depends on you soil pH, soil needs to be acidic (pH less than 7) for them to be blue:

Soil pH above 7 (alkaline) Blue Hydrangea cultivars will have pink flowers
Soil pH at 7 (neutral) Blue Hydrangeas will have pink/lilac/mauve flowers
Soil pH under 7 (acidic) Blue Hydrangeas will have blue flowers.

You can add blueing powder (aluminium salts) to alkaline soils which may help although planting white or pink varieties may be a better solution.

Hydrangea Mophead Blue Hedging

Hydrangea Renata Steigner has large powder blue flowers with a white centre. This deciduous shrub grows to 150cm. Best grown in well drained soil. The stunning large rounded flowerheads are displayed nicely against the shiny green leaves.

The acidity of the soil can affect the colour of the macrophyllas family of Hydrangea, a high acidic content can change the blue to a paler lilac colour and a higher alkaline mixture can change the colour to pink.
