Pleached Hornbeam trees are the trained form of our native hedging species that is quite similar to Green Beech, you can spot the difference easily because Hornbeam has more deeply veined leaves with serrated edges (the edge of a Beech leaf is smooth and wavy). The leaves are bright fresh green when they first emerge in mid Spring and become a deeper green as they mature later in the Summer. In Autumn the foliage changes through various shades of yellow before turning brown at the start of Winter.
Pleached Hornbeam trees are a traditional plant seen in formal English gardens and one of the most popular pleached species that we sell. We stock them in a range of sizes with clear stem heights of 120, 150, 180 and 200cm.
Pleached Hornbeam trees will retain their leaves during winter in the same way as Beech, although it can lose a few more leaves especially in windy weather. In winter the Hornbeam leaves are a darker nut-brown colour compared to the coppery brown of Beech. This is a useful pleached species because the retained leaves can help give privacy in all seasons

Hornbeam is a very popular hedging plant, not just because it looks good all year but also because it is so versatile. Hornbeam grows in all soil types, even if it is poorly drained and does not suffer from the late Spring frosts that can damage other hedge species. Hornbeam will grow in full sun and partial shade, this is also a good choice for difficult windy and exposed sites where the plants will thrive while bringing valuable shelter and privacy as they develop.
Pleached Hornbeam Trees are available as pot grown specimens for delivery all year round, or as root ball stock which is available for delivery during the Winter season of dormancy from late October until April.
Because of the size of our pleached Hornbeam trees (they are too tall for any courier delivery service!) all our Pleached Trees are delivered by our own transport, direct to you straight from our nursery. We usually use our own Land Rover and trailer and will always call you to arrange a mutually convenient day first. Delivery is still free for these beautiful trees but as they require a more bespoke approach to delivery and we do need a minimum order of £1500 (ex VAT) to cover our costs. (We can often deliver smaller orders with a contribution towards delivery, please do call our sales team on 01580 765600 or take a look at our delivery page)
Pleached Hornbeam trees are available for delivery to addresses in mainland England and Wales.
