The ideal time to plant Red Maple trees is in autumn or early spring, but potted trees can be planted anytime of year. Autumn planting gives the tree time to settle and acclimatise while the soil is still warm before winter sets in, and spring planting means the tree has plenty of time to establish before cold weather later in the year. If you plant in the summer, make sure the tree is watered regularly, and when planting in winter, ensure it is in a sheltered place and the ground isn’t waterlogged or frozen.
Red Maple trees are not red all year, but they are still colourful for most of the year. From spring through to when they change colour to red in autumn, they will have bright green pretty leaves. Late summer into autumn, the leaves do turn vibrant red, orange and yellow before dropping for winter. Red Maple trees lose their leaves during the cold months of the year since they’re deciduous trees, but the tree itself and the bark are interesting.
Red Maple trees do grow relatively fast, between 30 to 60cm per year, depending on growing conditions. If they are planted in good, well-drained soil which is neutral to slightly acidic, with regular water in dry spells and a mulch in winter, Red Maple should grow well.
Red Maple trees grow to about 12m usually, but there are some, given time and space, that may reach 15m in ideal conditions and care. They do need plenty of space to grow, and in smaller spaces, their growth will be limited to that space. If you need to manage the height and shape, regular pruning can help.

Acer Rubrum October Glory AGM (Red Maple)
The incomparable ruby foliage of Red Maple makes an enviable addition to any garden landscape and is well-deserving of its Award of Garden Merit. Clusters of small crimson spidery flowers are glimpsed among the deep green-lobed leaves in spring attracting pollinators aplenty, followed by trademark winged fruit common to all maples. Its autumn colour is outstanding when leaves turn blood-red before softly falling in winter. Its leafy canopy has an attractive rounded shape and the best leaf colour is achieved by growing Acer rubrum October Glory in a sunny spot.
