Malus Evereste

Happy and hardy in any decent well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade, Crab apple Evereste is tough as nails. Mostly trouble-free and low-maintenance, it offers country-style charm coupled with outstanding scented white blossom in early summer and burnished autumn fruits useful for culinary wizardry. A free-flowering beauty for city, cottage, country and wildlife gardens, it can also be wall-trained into attractive fans or espaliers where space is short.  4-8m x 4-8m

Plant our young potted trees at any time of year. Bare root trees should be planted when dormant between November and April. We supply root ball trees from October – May, the correct season for planting. Avoid planting when the ground is excessively wet or frozen. Remember, trees normally reach their ultimate height and spread within 20-50 years depending on species so give it ample growing room.

An outstanding problem-free deciduous tree that needs little pruning. Our nursery trees have already been shaped when young so require little attention but you can tidy them up in February or March if needed by removing any unwanted crossed branches or dead, damaged or diseased stems.

Further Information about Malus Evereste Flowering Crabapple Garden Trees

Are Malus Evereste Crabapples edible?

Malus Evereste Crabapples are stunning garden trees with an abundance of white flowers and lovely fruits. The fruit is edible, however you may not want to eat it straight from the tree as it’s really tart! But Evereste Crabapples make delicious jams, jellies and chutneys, so they’re ideal for baking with. If this interests you, why not read up on our hedging species with edible fruits?

Will Crabapple Evereste pollinate an apple tree?

Yes, Crabapple Evereste will pollinate an apple tree – they’re great pollinators for many apple varieties, so they’re a great addition to any fruit garden. Crabapple Evereste trees produce pollen for a long period of time and are therefore often planted near to other apple trees for pollination.

Crabapple Evereste itself is self-pollinating, so it doesn’t need other pollinators to flower and produce fruit, but it will flower more abundantly if planted with other apple trees. Visit our Knowledge Base for more insights on planting and aftercare.

Are Malus Evereste Crabapples Edible?

Malus Evereste Crabapples are edible when cooked. They make delicious preserves, jelly, sweet pies and jam but when eaten raw they are sour and full of seeds. It is better to remove the seeds, especially if eating large quantities which can cause mild toxic side effects.

Can I Grow Malus Evereste In Windy Conditions?

For a thriving, long living Malus it is best to plant in a sheltered position, especially if you are in a windy area such as by the coast. Malus evereste is a medium size tree and can be kept compact which helps to stop strong wind damage, but to reduce the possibility of damage, a sheltered position is ideal. Ensure Malus is planted in a well drained position because a wet, waterlogged soil can contribute to root rot, making the tree more vulnerable in strong windy conditions.

How To Plant A Malus Evereste Tree

Plant Malus Evereste in a sunny spot for at least 6 hours of sun a day to encourage plenty of flowers, although it will tolerate some partial shade as well. The soil should be well drained and the planting hole prepared with some well rotted organic matter to provide the tree with nutrients and improve soil structure. Plant into the pre dug hole with the top of the rootball level with the soil around it. Fill the hole in, firm down and add a layer of mulch on top avoiding about 10cm around the base of the tree. Finish by watering well and regularly while it is establishing, especially in dry weather. Read our site preparation, planting and aftercare guide for more advice.

How To Prune Malus Evereste

Late winter into early spring is the time to prune Malus before the tree flowers. A light summer prune is also possible after flowering but if left too late, the tree will become susceptible to frost damage. Start by using clean, sharp tools and removing any dead, diseased or damaged branches completely. Remove crossing, rubbing or branches growing in towards the centre to improve air and light flow. Always water after pruning and apply a light mulch if needed.

Malus Evereste AGM (Evereste Crabapple)

Is there any prettier sight than a crab apple in full bloom? Branching Evereste crab apple is one of the best in its class, a confection of pink-flushed spring buds opening to a fragrant, confetti of white sparkling blossom against shiny deep green lobed foliage in May. Bees, butterflies, hoverflies and moths drift between the boughs and small jaunty orange crab apples stud the tree in plenty after the flowers fade. A forager’s heaven, inspiring crab apple sauce for roast pork, jellies and even flavoured spirits including whisky, vodka and gin. Crab apples also act as pollinators for other varieties of neighbouring apple trees. Evereste crab apple has a rounded spreading shape, growing increasingly gnarly and twiggy with age.
