Hydrangea macrophylla Lavbla

A beautful mophead Hydrangea with large heads of rich blue flowers, the florets have a creamy coloured centre when you deepening in colour as they mature. A bushy and healthy plant of robust constitution growing to 150cm high and wide. Great for borders or as an informal hedging plant.

Hydrangea Lavbla is easy to grow in sun or partial shade, they prefer a rich moisture retaining soil that doesnt dry out too much in Summer, thinnner and lighter soils would benefit from a good amount of organic matter being well mixed in the hole at planting time and these glorious shrubs enjoy a good mulch being applied during Spring to get the best from them, this is especially the case for younger plants. Prune the old flower heads off in spring, reducing the plants back to a strong bud and removing any weak or crossing stems. We recommend adding Rootgrow when planting all Hydrangeas to give them the best start.

Blue Flowered Hydrangea information – the colour of the flowers depends on you soil pH, soil needs to be acidic (pH less than 7) for them to be blue:

Soil pH above 7 (alkaline) Blue Hydrangea cultivars will have pink flowers

Soil pH at 7 (neutral) Blue Hydrangeas will have pink/lilac/mauve flowers

Soil pH under 7 (acidic) Blue Hydrangeas will have blue flowers.

You can add blueing powder (aluminium salts) to alkaline soils which may help although planting white or pink varieties may be a better solution.

How to grow Hydrangea Lavbla

Position: Full sun, partial shade.

Foliage: Deciduous shrub, leaves drop from the plant in Autumn and fresh new ones emerge in Spring.

Soil and site: Any good soil that retains moisture in Summer, Hydrangeas dont like to be dry.

Flowering time: July to September

Growth rate: moderate

Ultimate height and spread: 150cm high x 150cm wide.

Hardiness: Fully hardy.

Aftercare: Water regularly after planting and for the first season. Prune and mulch in Spring.
