About our Privet Hedging

Privet hedging plants – The privet hedge (Ligustrum) is a popular hedge because it can tolerate shade and poor soil, is fast growing and is great for wildlife. It is a deciduous shrub and is native across Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australasia. We stock a variety of privet plants throughout the year, including; Ligustrum Ovalifolium Aureum, Ligustrum Ovalifolium, and Ligustrum Vulgare.

This beautiful hedging plant is renowned for its fragrant, delicate white flowers that appear in the summer, which then turn into black fruits come autumn to help feed wildlife. It’s quite a sturdy hedge, and may only lose some of its leaves during a very cold winter. It provides a dense covering and will need pruning, which it responds well to as it grows rather quickly. It’s round, dense leaves and dark, glossy foliage clip extremely well, providing your garden with an immaculate finish all year round.

How to Plant Privet Hedges

Privet hedge can be used in almost any garden given its high level of adaptability, suitable for both inland and coastal areas. Ideal for wind-proofing, screening, and noise reduction, these are ideal privacy hedges. It even has a high tolerance for pollution, so grows well in urban areas.

It is suitable for hedge designs that are between three and 10 feet, and it’s best to plant them 12 to 18 inches apart for a single row. For a thicker, fuller hedge, plant a staggered row, 18 inches apart and 15 inches between rows.

If placed correctly, privet hedging plants can grow up to 5 metres in height, with a maximum growth rate of around 20-40cm per year depending on conditions and location. Once placed, privet hedge is extremely hard-wearing and rarely dies out. This is what makes the plant one of our most popular hedging plants.
