Weigela Ebony and Ivory shrubs are the ideal plant for almost any garden style from contemporary to traditional. With their unique foliage of a rich dark green that turns a deep ruby plum colour as Summer progresses, they deliver an abundance of elegant, red throated, white trumpet flowers in early Summer that contrast beautifully with the dark leaves and are very popular with bees. These are smashing little plants that have a graceful, arching, spreading habit.
With their old-fashioned charm, and hugely popular due to their striking foliage, Weigela Ebony and Ivory are very versatile and look wonderful planted towards the front of a border with paler plants such as Achillea, Lychnis or Alchemilla Mollis as a contrasting backdrop. Alternatively, they are very happy in pots and containers or planted to gently curve over the edge of raised beds. Very easy to grow, Weigela Ebony and Ivory are also ideal for an unusual low flowering hedge.

Low maintenance, Weigela Ebony and Ivory ground cover can be planted in any fertile, well drained soil. They are pretty drought resistant once established but are happiest with a regular supply of water during dry summers, though try to avoid the soil becoming waterlogged. For best results plant them in full sun (they will tolerate semi-shade but may produce less flowers). Deadhead after flowering to encourage repeat blooms and prune in mid-late Summer, (as Weigela blooms on last years’ growth it is recommended to wait until after flowering), removing one or two of the older stems to the base and cutting back the flowered stems to strong shoots below the spent flowers.
