Olive Tree Topiary

Olive Tree topiary lollipops (Olea europaea)

Our appetite for growing olive trees shows no sign of abating, largely because they are tough, architectural evergreens for gardens of all sizes. Unless you live in the Mediterranean it’s unlikely a British-grown olive tree will ever achieve the gnarled ancient structure that dot arid sun-scorched hillsides and groves from Southern Europe to the Middle East but that doesn’t detract from their popularity or versatility. There’s almost no need to explain that olives are slow-growing evergreen trees with small, rounded aromatic grey-green leaves with silver undersides. Tiny white flowers appear in summer but they rarely bear fruit in the UK which is just as well as it spares us the vicious festering bites of olives flies that normally occur around June. Olive trees offer sculptural accents throughout the year and create exemplary textured topiary.

Olive Tree Topiary

Happy and hardy in most areas of the UK except Northern extremes in any decent, well-drained soil in full sun. Drought-resistant, mostly trouble-free and low-maintenance, Olive trees are vital for adding visual accents to both contemporary and informal gardens and make seductive highlights for country, Mediterranean, suburban, country gardens and patios. Sunny balconies and roof terraces, and small urban courtyards have room for potted Olive topiary. Happy grown-in-ground or planters framing paths and entrances and are attractive in kitchen gardens and potagers.

Plant our young potted Olive Trees anytime in full sun or any decent well-drained soil. Avoid planting when the ground is excessively wet or frozen.
