YEW HEDGE –TAXUS BACCATA HEDGE-TAXUS BACCATA YEW HEDGING PLANTS

The English Yew (Taxus Baccata) is the aristocrat of hedging plants, the bushy growth of this hardy native conifer clips beautifully into any shape making it the best choice for a dense formal hedge of any size. English Yew hedges may be established successfully in any situation from full sun to dense shade.

Taxus Baccata has small narrow needle like dark green leaves arranged in two flat rows either side of the stems. English Yew trees have thin scaly light brown bark which peels in small flakes. Yew trees produce cone shaped fruits, each consisting of a single seed surrounded by a fleshy red coating popular with birds especially thrushes. Apart from the red seed coating, all parts of the English Yew are poisonous to stock and humans.

Mature Yew trees can grow to 70ft (21 metres) or more, much debate surrounds the age of the oldest specimens, even the lowest estimates of 2,000 years make Taxus Baccata the longest living plant in Europe. Ancient Yews are a common site in churchyards throughout the UK. Yew trees have great religious significance, not only as a symbol of long life but also to discourage local farmers from allowing their stock to graze inside the burial grounds!

In the wild, native Yew trees are found on chalky soil but will grown just as happily on acidic soil. The only essential prerequisite for a successful Yew hedge is good drainage. Yew hedging plants have a reputation for being slow growing but with good soil preparation a young Yew hedge can easily grow 1ft (30cm) in a year. This will slow down as the plants grow older making English Yew (Taxus Baccata) one of the few evergreen hedges that can be kept tidy with a single trim each year.

Yew hedging plants are easily trimmed into shape, new Yew hedges will require little more than the shortening of any wayward side branches in the early years to produce a bushy hedge. When ‘topping out’ your Yew hedge, do so slightly short of the ultimate height as this will produce a denser, bushier hedge as they re-grow. English Yew is one of the few hedging conifers that will regenerate when pruned back into the old wood. Overgrown Taxus Baccata hedges may be cut back hard in the spring, with a little kindness in the form of a generous mulch and feed the bare stems will produce a flush of new growth within weeks and the Yew hedge should be restored to its former glory within 2-3 years.

Yew hedge plants (Taxus Baccata) suffer from few pests and diseases, the most common problems are caused by poor drainage. The roots of Yews planted in boggy conditions are often invaded by the Phytophthora fungus causing the plants to change from dark green to a sickly yellow-bronze colour. If swift action is taken to improve drainage the plants can often be saved. Scale insects are occasionally seen on the foliage of Yew hedges, these small flattened white ‘blobs’ are in no way life threatening, a spray with soapy water is usually enough to send them packing.

For a new Taxus Baccata Yew hedge we recommend planting 18-24 inches (45-60cm) apart. We have an unrivalled choice of sizes, all are grown here on the nursery and are equally suitable for formal or informal Yew hedges so the choice is really a matter of budget or patience! Bare rooted Yew hedging plants (available Nov-March) are an excellent low cost route to establishing a new Yew hedge, they may not make a great deal of growth in the first year as they settle in but will make a faster growth rate the following season. Larger rootballed Yew hedging plants (available Oct-April) are perfect if you require a more instant effect. These older plants are much bushier and more developed and will make a screen more quickly.

Pot grown Yew hedges plants do not suffer any root disturbance and will therefore establish quickly when planted at any time of year. We have them available in a complete range of sizes to suit both patient and impatient gardeners!

All our Yew hedging plants (Taxus Baccata) are covered by our guarantee and we will supply planting and aftercare instructions with all orders. Rootgrow and Bonemeal will give your new Yew hedge a good start and may be found on the left hand menu.
