James Grieve Apple Trees

James Grieve Apple Trees. An exceptional and multiple award winning dual purpose apple variety that was introduced way back in 1893, has been a parent of many other fine apple varieties (such as Katy and Lord Lambourne) and is still a ‘must have’ in any home orchard.

The large fruits have a green skin, strikingly flushed and streaked with crimson red with cream coloured flesh that is exceptionally juicy. The fruits can be picked from late August onwards at which time they will be sharp and firm making a great apple for pies and tarts. As they mature on the tree the fruits become sweeter and very acceptable eaters, always with a refreshing edge of sharpness.

This is a reliable cropper with frost resistant blossom that appears in late April, also remarkable for its resistance to scab.

While James Grieve is partially self-fertile, like all apple trees, heavier crops are produced when they are planted with a suitable pollination partner that is in the same or an adjacent group.  James Grieve is in group 3 so any other variety in groups 2, 3 or 4 would be suitable. These would include Bramley, Cox, Discovery, Gala or Golden Delicious.

James Grieve Apple trees are easy to grow in most soils that do not become waterlogged, young trees will establish and develop more quickly if a small circle around the base 50-100cm across is kept completely clear of weeds, ideally with a mulch of bark chippings or similar to conserve moisture. We also recommend adding rootgrow when planting for faster root establishment.

Our James Grieve Apple trees make a strong and healthy growing tree with very pretty blossom in late Spring and has good natural disease resistance. Our trees grown on the semi dwarfing rootstock MM106 which will reach a mature height of approximately 10 to 12 feet and is a great ‘all-rounder’ rootstock suited to both small and large gardens. Our trees are also ideal for training into cordon or espalier trees should you wish.
