Euonymus japonicus microphyllus Aureovariegatus (Japanese Spindle)
A plucky little cousin to the larger leaved types of Euonymus japonicus. This evergreen shrub has glossy, elongated deep green leaves 2cm long. Each leaf has a conspicuous bright golden yellow edging making this a colourful addition to the garden that looks immaculate and tidy in all seasons.
Euonymus microphyllus Aureovariegatus looks good in mixed shrub borders and beds with its colourful leaf display enduring long after many other garden plants have had their season, they are compact lending them well to growing in containers to brighten a patio whether it is sunny or shady. Because Euonymus microphyllus Aureovariegatus shrubs have an upright habit of growth, they make perfect little hedges too – plant them at 3-5 per metre and withing a few seasons you will have a cheeful little evergreen hedge to brighten your plot that is manageable and easy to keep at 40-100cm in height. This little shrub is well wothy of consideration as an alternative to Box hedging.
Euonymus microphyllus Aureovariegatus is an easy and unfussy plant to grow, they do well in all soil types and are suitable for full sun and partial or even moderate shade. Try to avoid planting them in boggy and wet situations, their only real dislike. This variety is ideal for growing in seaside gardens where the mild blustery winds and salty air present no problem. Hedges and shrubs are best trimmed in Spring.
