The Cupressus x Leylandii is most commonly referred to as just Leylandii and is an extremely popular choice of cypress, owing primarily to its fast growing and dense habit making it ideal for privacy hedges and screening.
This hybrid came about with the close planting proximity in the late 1800’s of Monterey cypress and Nootka cypress allowing cross pollination. A plant grown from cuttings it has been much maligned as if left unchecked can rapidly make a very high barrier which is not always popular, however when looking for a barrier to check noise and pollution the Leylandii is an excellent choice.
Leylandii are an upright columnar fast growing plant with dark green foliage making some 2.5-3ft of new growth per year. They are hardy and tolerant of the most inclement planting situations making them a favourite for roadside planting. They are also particularly suitable for coastal sites as they will cope with both wind and salt, and are much favoured by landscapers for using in parkland areas to provide shelter.
Planting 2-3 per metre will with judicious and consistent clipping quickly give a dense privacy screen of some 2 metres high.
Leylandii are sold as potted plants in many sizes making them available at any time of year. Should planting not be possible when your plants arrive then checking they are kept watered means planting can take place when convenient.
