The popular and easily recognisable Leylandii Gold hedge is a favourite hedge in gardens across the country. It has a golden yellow foliage, which with age can turn into more of a bronze shade. Popular for its fast growing nature (but not as quick as Green Leylandii), the Leylandii Gold is a multi-purpose hedge, perfect for use as a protective windshield for any wind burdened garden whether large or small. It can also help to filter out both pollution and noise.

Its shape is more conical but does produce a dense, bushy effect which is great at providing wildlife with shelter and your garden with shade in the hotter months. It can be kept at any height and in any shape you desire, so long as it is pruned regularly in the spring or summer to prevent it growing out of control. If left untrimmed it can grow up to two feet a year.

It makes for a great topiary hedge, especially with its golden yellow colouring, making its shape stand out against your other plants and darker hedges. The Leylandii Gold can tolerate being planted in any soil including chalk and clay. It prefers a sunnier spot but does well in part shade too. It can grow well in either sheltered or exposed sites and loves residing in coastal areas.

When you come to planting your Golden Leylandii we would recommend setting them two feet apart so they can grow and connect into one hedge. If you are wanting your hedge to be taller or to act as a windbreak, then plant them apart around a quarter of the proposed height. Golden Leylandii hedges are coniferous and are hence susceptible to damage by small aphids. Follow our handy guide to protect your hedges from Cypress Aphids. Additionally, if your hedge begins to exhibit signs of poor growth, it may be the case that it is affected by a fungal disease, such as Honey Fungus.
