Our flowering native hedgerow mix is made up from the following tried and tested species to offer the longest possible flowering season:

25% Quickthorn (Hawthorn, May) – Crataegus Monogyna
25% Blackthorn (Sloe) – Prunus Spinosa

50% selected from the following (minimum of 5 species)
Snowy Mespilus – Amelanchier Lamarckii, Dog Rose – Rosa Canina, Elder – Sambucus Nigra, Myrobalan Plum – Prunus Cerasifera, Guelder Rose – Viburnum opulus, Wild Crabapple – Malus Sylvestris, Bird Cherry – Prunus padus, Spindle – Euonymus europaeus, Red Rugosa Rose – Rosa rugosa Rubra, White Rugosa Rose – Rosa rugosa alba
Single Row
When planting a new flowering native hedgerow, we recommend using 3 plants per metre for a single row hedge, placing each plant 13inches/33cm apart.
Double Row
For a thicker double row hedge use 5 plants per metre, placing the plants 40cm apart in each row with 40cm between the 2 rows.
Extra Thick
For an extra thick and dense hedge that may be achieved more quickly, use 7 plants per metre in a double row, placing each plant 11inches/28cm apart in each row with 40cm between the 2 rows.

Flowering native hedgerow hedge plants are supplied as top quality bare root plants available when they’re dormant from November until April or as potted plants which may be planted out at any time of year. All our hedgerow mixes are sold in multiples of 50 plants.

Multiple packs : Bare root flowering mixed native plants are sold on a 50-plant basis, but orders for multiple packs of the same mix will not be broken down into individual 50 plant packs. (For example – an order for 6 packs (300 plants) will contain 75 Quickthorn, 75 Blackthorn and 150 mixed plants, not 6 individual packs of 50) This saves us time preparing orders meaning we can give discounts for orders of 2 or more packs in the pricing tables on this page. We don’t label the individual species.

When planting our Flowering Hedge Mix we recommend adding a sparing amount of bone meal to the soil, Rootgrow is also very effective for speeding up establishment. If you have a good supply of compost, soil improver or well-rotted manure that will certainly help get the new hedge off to a great start. Additions like this should always be well mixed into the soil for maximum benefit, not like a sandwich layer.

We have a useful how to plant a hedge page on the website with lots of tips on getting the best from your plants.

Like our other hedgerow mixes, Flowering Hedging is best trimmed from August onwards when nesting birds have fledged (and before the end of February when the new nesting season starts). With any luck you may be able to persuade a neighbouring farmer to trim it back with his flail hedge trimmer if the hedge is a long one, and just as good as cutting by hand.

For maximum wildlife benefit you might like to consider only cutting only one side of the hedge each year. While this will make the hedge larger and wider it will provide much more cover for wildlife and birds. It will also make the hedge much more productive in terms of flowers, nuts, seeds and berries for the wildlife because there will always be some 2 year old branches on the hedge that are more likely to produce flowers and fruits.

Flowering Mixed Native Hedging

Flowering mixed native hedging – A natural stock and burglar proof hedge with a twist, this mix of species will provide flowers for much of the season, not to mention colourful hips, berries and autumn foliage later on.

Using the experience gained from over 25 years as the leading hedging supplier in the UK, we have created a reliable and imaginative mix of plants to give the longest possible flowering season without using more ‘suburban’ hedging plants.

Mixed hedges can be maintained at any height from 120cm up to several metres, and they’re best pruned once a year from August onwards, ideally in winter. Do take care to leave some of the persistent berries/fruits for the birds if you prefer.

Full details of the species included in our Flowering hedge mix may be found at the bottom of the page (we don’t label the individual species), simply plant them in a randomized mixture for a natural look that will quickly become a haven for wildlife. The prices shown for our mixed native hedging is per plant and we sell them in multiples of 50.
