Common Dogwood (Cornus Sanguinea) is a deciduous hedge that is large in size, often found within mixed hedging in the countryside. It is characterised by its beautiful autumnal foliage, producing fiery red and copper leaves that turn green as the season progresses. During spring and summer, the Cornus Sanguinea will also produce white flowers which, when pollinated, turn into black berries.

It has been used for many years predominantly as an ornamental plant to provide us with fantastic autumn colour in our gardens, and much needed food for wildlife during the colder months.

Cornus Sanguinea hedging plants like to be planted in either partial or full sunlight and can work well in most soil types, and are especially well suited for chalky soil. While it prefers well-drained moist soil, it can still flourish in wet, windy and exposed areas.

Common Dogwood can grow up to two and a half metres and the same in width, although it does take between five and ten years to reach its ultimate height. It is a great hedge for heights of 4-7ft, and we would recommend planting these 18-24 inches apart. Take this into consideration when thinking about how many Cornus Sanguinea plants to buy!

Common Dogwood plants are primarily available in bare root form, which is the most affordable way to buy hedging plants. For more information on Cornus Sanguinea or any of our other hedging plants, contact our specialist team on 01580 765600.
