Pittosporum tenuifolium is an upright evergreen shrub with attractive glossy leathery pale green wavy edged leaves. The contrast of this unusually shaped foliage, which are approximately 8cm long, against the dark slender stem colour provides year-round interest, making this variety extremely popular with flower arrangers. This classic flower arranger’s plant is the parent species of many valued varieties such as Pittosporum ‘Abbotsbury Gold’, Pittosporum ‘Elizabeth’ and Pittosporum ‘Tom Thumb’. Pittosporum tenuifolium is a handsome bushy shrub with a neat columnar habit, useful to any gardener when creating a garden design. Excellent as a handsome solitary plant either at the back of a border for structure and architectural interest or as container grown plant on a patio which can be pruned to shape. When planted close together it makes an unusual but very attractive hedge bearing understated small purple flowers in late spring through to early summer, which surprisingly only produce their delicious honey scent in the evening! Rounded orange fruits follow when flowering has ceased making Pittosporum tenuifolium hedging very attractive to wildlife, birds and bees providing excellent shelter, nectar and food.

These sturdy reliable low maintenance plants are best in full sun, growing up to 4mtr in time. Tolerant of most well drained soils, Pittosporum tenuifolium hedging is hardy but will struggle in colder areas that regularly freeze with cold winds. Therefore, giving thought to the positioning or the need to give them protection over the winter months should be considered when planting. It makes a great hedging plant for milder locations, making it an excellent choice for coastal gardens. They are best trimmed after flowering in mid spring and can take heavy pruning if required.

Pittosporum tenuifolium hedging is always sold as a potted plant and can be planted at any time of year subject to availability. We would recommend planting between 3 and 4 plants per meter to produce a nice hedge.

To obtain the best possible hedge, the ground preparation is important. Digging the site over well, clearing all weed and grass from the area you are planting should be done. Taking a moment to read the section on our How to plant a Hedge page will be invaluable to help you give your shrubs the best possible opportunity to thrive.

We recommend the use of Rootgrow mycorrhizal fungi and Bonemeal fertiliser when planting giving the plants a head start and encouraging strong healthy growth.
