Our Species Rich native hedgerow mix is suitable for all soil types in full sun and partial shade, also suitable for exposed sites providing a wealth of flowers, fruits, hips and Autumn colour. This is the perfect hedge for wildlife with its rich variety of species.

The Species Rich native hedgerow is selected from the following plants:

50% Quickthorn (Hawthorn, May) – Crataegus Monogyna
25% Blackthorn (Sloe) – Prunus Spinosa
25% selected from the following
Common Alder – Alnus Glutinosa, Common Dogwood – Cornus Sanguinea, Hornbeam – Carpinus betulus, Field maple – Acer Campestre, Guelder Rose – Viburnum Opulus, Hazel – Corylus Avellana, Dog Rose – Rosa Canina, Bird Cherry – Prunus padus, Green Beech – Fagus sylvatica, Spindle – Euonymus Europaeus, Wild Crabapple – Malus Sylvestris
Single Row
When planting a new species rich native hedge, we recommend using 3 plants per metre for a single row hedge planting them each 13inches/33cm apart.
Double Row
For a thicker double row hedge use 5 plants per metre – setting the plants 40cm apart in each row with 40cm between the 2 rows.
Extra Thick
To achieve an extra thick, dense hedge faster, use 7 plants per metre in a double row, planting them each 11inches/28cm apart in each row with 40cm between the 2 rows.

Our Species Rich native hedgerow mix plants are sold in bare root form and are available for purchase and planting when they are lying dormant from November through to April, sometimes into May when we have plants available from our cold store.

All our hedgerow mixes are sold in multiples of 50 plants.

Multiple packs : Bare root mixed native plants are sold on a 50-plant basis, but orders for multiple packs of the same mix will not be broken down into individual 50 plant packs. (For example – an order for 6 packs (300 plants) would contain 150 Quickthorn, 75 Blackthorn and 75 mixed species, not 6 packs of 50) This saves us time preparing orders meaning we can give discounts for orders of 2 or more packs in the pricing tables on this page. We don’t label the individual species.

When planting Species Rich hedging we recommend adding a sparing amount of bone meal to the soil, Rootgrow is also very effective for speeding up establishment. If you have a good supply of compost, soil improver or well-rotted manure that will certainly help get the new hedge off to a great start. Additions like this should always be well mixed into the soil for maximum benefit, not like a sandwich layer.

Like our other hedgerow mixes, Species Rich Hedging is best trimmed from August onwards when nesting birds have fledged (and before the end of February when the new nesting season starts). With any luck you may be able to persuade a neighbouring farmer to trim it back with his flail hedge trimmer if the hedge is a long one, and just as good as cutting by hand.

For maximum wildlife benefit you might like to consider only cutting only one side of the hedge each year. While this will make the hedge larger and wider it will provide much more cover for wildlife and birds. It will also make the hedge much more productive in terms of flowers, nuts, seeds and berries for the wildlife because there will always be some 2 year old branches on the hedge that are more likely to produce flowers and fruits.

Delivery is free for most orders above our free delivery thresholds, these are displayed above our prices in the product listings and summarized below. If you don’t need that many plants it’s not a problem, you can choose to pay our delivery charge and only order what you need.

Delivery is convenient – no signature is required so you don’t need to wait in, we will leave your parcel in the safe place that you nominate.

Delivery is fast – because we pick orders daily from our own growing beds your plants only travel the small hop to our packing shed before being sent to you, they are usually delivered within 5-7 working days.

Delivery is reliable – we have been selling and delivering Hedging Plants to our customers nationwide since 1992. We have a lot of experience in packing them safely and only use tried and tested delivery partners.

Exceptions to our delivery charges are Scottish Highland and Isle of Wight delivery areas where we need to charge a little extra to cover the cost of deliveries to these outlying areas. We don’t currently delivery to other offshore addresses including Northern Ireland and Southern Ireland.

Tall plants over 2.5 metres have to be delivered by our own specialised transport, our delivery area is limited to mainland England and Wales only.

Please note there is a minimum order value of £50 for orders containing smaller plants and £250 for orders containing heavier plants
