Viburnum Shrubs

Viburnum shrubs

Viburnum shrubs are superb and varied plants with varieties for interest in all seasons, including Viburnum bodnantense Dawn and Viburnum opulus Roseum. Viburnums are lovely, often highly scented, hardy flowering garden shrubs, known as one of the most versatile of plants with attractive foliage. It will grow happily in any moderate soil as long as not too wet or waterlogged, in full sun or partial shade and are easy to care for.

At Hopes Grove Nurseries, each variety is different with bright, stunning colours that will populate your garden when in bloom. They’re particularly beneficial for pollinators, as their bright colours are popular with honeybees and bumblebees during the warmer months. Foraging birds are also attracted to the plants as foraging and nesting spots.

The deciduous species are known for their fantastic hues of autumn colour before the foliage drops. Evergreens tend to have a deep glossy leaf with flowers produced over the winter such as Viburnum odoratissimum Coppertop, making for excellent shrubs or even hedges large and small. Nearly all will flower, some with heady scents to add to the enjoyment of them whether planted as a Viburnum hedge, in borders or as specimen plants or even in some cases medium-sized trees.

Flower heads of viburnum are usually either flat-topped similar to that of lace-cap hydrangea hedges or snowball types with globe or dome-shaped flower clusters. Some varieties such as the highly ornamental deciduous Viburnum Bodnantense Dawn, flower on bare branches over during winter,  providing pretty and scented interest over the cold dank months, perfect for the walkway to your house entrance with the fragrance greeting your visitors as they pass. They also make great border flowers and add structure to your garden, but also a touch of colour.

The pompom flowers, acid green turning to brilliant white, of one of the oldest viburnums on record Opulus Roseum (snowball bush), a garden favourite, give the most delightful effect bobbing around like snowballs planted either as an ornamental hedge or a specimen shrub.

The best time to plant Viburnums is from autumn until spring. This is to ensure that the roots have time to establish before summer heat or winter cold.
