BOX HEDGE-BOX HEDGING, BUXUS SEMPERVIRENS, COMMON BOX HEDGE

Buxus sempervirens or Common Box is one the most widely used and accommodating plants for small hedges, edgings and topiary. The small luxuriant dark green leaves lend themselves to trimming and clipping into virtually any shape.
Albeit slow growing like all Box varieties (-link HGN/Box), Buxus Sempervirens is an evergreen tree attaining a height of 30ft (9m). Box is generally found on chalkland in the wild the largest natural stand of Common Box in the UK is at Box Hill in the North Downs of Surrey.

Common Box produces small oval leaves arranged in opposite pairs, pale green at first developing to a rich dark green as they mature. The insignificant yellow flowers appear in clusters from late winter into early spring.

The wood (Boxwood) of Buxus Sempervirens is hard and close grained- perfect for cabinet making, marquetry and wood turning. The leaves are very bitter and seldom troubled by rabbits or other browsing animals. Common Box is slow growing at 4-6 inches (10-15cm) per year and is usually seen as a small internal garden hedge or edging of between 1 and 3ft (30-90cm) tall, with patience it will slowly form a much larger Box hedge of 16ft (5m) or more. Box hedging plants should be planted 9-12 inches (22-30cm) apart. A good Box hedge can be grown in any well drained soil in sun or shade. Good soil preparation will give your Box hedging plants a much better start, compost or other organic matter should be applied to the top spades depth of soil only as Buxus sempervirens is a shallow surface rooting plant. An annual mulch will keep the fleshy roots of your Box hedge cool during the hot summer months and help maintain a lustrous dark green colour.

Box hedging plants are traditionally trimmed on Derby day in early June, any time in early summer is fine – or at least well before the first autumn frosts.Early trimming will give your Box hedge ample time to ripen new growth before the autumn, late soft growth can be damaged by frost allowing fungal spores to enter the hedge. Box hedging is best trimmed with a sharp pair of hand shears, these will leave fewer brown edges than any hedge trimmer making a much neater finished job. Try and choose a cool overcast day to trim your Common Box hedge.

Buxus Sempervirens suffers from few pests or disorders. A new Common box hedge may sometimes develop a creamy white margin on the leaves which is caused by a lack of sulphur but this will normally pass as the root system develops and nourishes your new hedge. Box aphids are common, feeding on the new growth in spring, if you brush against an infested Box hedge a tell-tale cloud of sticky dust will appear. This can be treated but no real damage is sustained just a few misshapen leaves.

Keeping your Box hedging in ‘good heart’ will boost its natural defences. Pest and diseases are far less likely to attack healthy plants- an annual mulch in spring together with a feed of Seaweed fertiliser will not only help protect your Box hedge but also maintain a luxuriant dark green colour. All plants are covered by our guarantee and we will supply full cultural instructions with your order. We strongly recommend Rootgrow and Bonemeal to help establish newly planted trees, these may found on the left hand menu.
