Escallonia hedging is a popular option for those looking for a vibrant hedge variety for their garden. As an evergreen shrub, Escallonia hedge boasts glossy leaves with a dark green colour, which perfectly offsets the hoards of bright flowers which adorn the branches during the summer months – typically from around early June onwards.

This hardy shrub is suited to a variety of soils, although it is not particularly shade tolerant, making it well suited to sunnier positions. Escallonia hedging can thrive in coastal locations, although it is best to avoid cold areas of your garden if you want to get the best from your new hedging shrub. One of the many positives of Escallonia shrubs is their relatively speedy growing rate, as well as the numerous varieties that are available – meaning you are sure to find a variety that suits your tastes.

When you buy Escallonia hedging plants from us they will be sent from our family-run nursery in Kent, where they have been well cared for for the duration of their life. This love and care we put into them means that they will flourish when they are planted in their new forever home – whether that’s in your home or as part of a larger landscaping project.
How to Plant Escallonia Hedging
Escallonia hedge plants are a great choice for coastal gardens where they thrive in the salty winds, with a long flowering season and year round privacy they are also popular inland. They can be grown in a wide range of conditions, and can even be placed on patios as potted hedging.

The plants are best-suited to areas in full sun with well-drained soil but can grow in a variety of conditions. Having said this, maintenance for Escallonia hedges is minimal, and do not even require pruning in order to grow successfully.

If your Escallonia is becoming too large or overcrowding other plants in your garden, it is best to trim them in the early summer once the plants have flowered. Pruning the plant before this will dramatically reduce the number of flowers blooming in that year.

When left to grow,  Escallonia can reach up to 3m in height, and depending on the density you would like you may decide to plant them at different lengths apart. We’d recommend achieving an evenly spaced hedge, to plant them roughly 45cm apart.

If you’re looking for a similar alternative that’s slightly hardier, try Choisya hedging.
