Laurel Marbled White (Prunus laurocerasus Marbled White)
An unusual variety of Cherry Laurel, Prunus laurocerasus Marbled White has the same elongated leathery evergreen leaves as the usual Cherry Laurel, but they are speckled and marbled irregularly with creamy white making this a very colourful alternative. Untrimmed shrubs will produce clusters of white flowers in spring that are very popular with pollinating insects, followed by rounded cherry like fruits later in the season that are often taken by birds.
Cherry Laurels are popular hedging and screening plants, this is a slower growing and more compact type that makes a lovely dense evergreen hedge or a handsome specimen plant that could be trimmed into a variety of shapes. The Marbled White Laurel looks attractive and neat all year and are good plants to give structure to the garden, well developed hedges will give complete privacy, suppress traffic noise and filter pollution. Evergreen Laurel hedges also make great cover for wildlife.
Marbled White Laurel will grow in most soils that have good drainage, the only unsuitable soil type is chalk where we would recommend you take a look at Portuguese Laurel as a better alternative. Prunus laurocerasus Marbled white will grow at 20-40cm per year and will make a beautiful evergreen hedge feauture that can be kept at any height from 90cm up to several metres. Plant them in sun or shade, unlike many variegated plants this one keeps its colours strongly in shady situations.
When planting we recommend adding Rootgrow to the planting holes to give the young potted shrubs the best start. As the young hedge develops we recommend trimming them in late summer or early in spring to keep them in good order.
