Escallonia Gold Ellen Hedging
Escallonia Gold Ellen (Escallonia laevis Gold Ellen)
Our most colouful Escallonia, Gold Ellen has glossy evergreen foliage of golden yellow, sometimes with a green splash in the centre. During the Summer months cluster of red-pink flowers appear, highlighted by the vibrant foliage colour. This is a naturally bushy plant that simply looks great all year.
Escallonia Gold Ellen is a good space filler in flower beds, especially to give contrast next to dark leaved plants and like other varieties of Escallonia it responds very well to trimming making it an excellent hedging plant. The plants are easy to grow and by using 3-4 plants per metre an attractive screen will be produced in a few seasons. They can be easily maintained anywhere from 100-150cm or more, once the desired height has been reached a single trim after flowering in late Summer will keep your hedge in good order.
Escallonia are suitable for all soil types although they dislike excess winter wet and poor drainage. This is an excellent hedging plant or shrub to grow by the sea, virtually untouched by salty winds. They are a good choice for inland gardens too and they cope well with strong winds, but not very cold sites where extreme frost may cut the plants back.
