This large native tree is similar to green beech but may be distingusihed by its deeped veining and serrated edge on its mid green leaves. The leaves turn yellow in autumn then nut brown in winter and are retained when grown as a hedge if trimmed in late summer. Unlike beech, it will thrive in wet soil and frost pockets. Plant 12-18ins apart or for a really thick hedge plant a staggered double row 18-24 inches between plants and 15 inches between the two rows. Suitable for hedges 3ft and upwards. See ornamental tree section for Fastigiate Hornbeam.
