Ajuga ground cover plants are easy to grow evergreen carpeting perennials, perfect for cutting down maintenance in between larger plants, especially at the edge of shady flower beds. They are also useful for shady banks and more difficult areas that dont dry out completely during summer weather. They also look good mixed in with winter interest containers with Spring Bulbs, Primroses and Pansies.
The flowers are usually bright blue in colour and appear during spring and early summer. All Ajuga ground cover plants will quickly develop into an effective weed supressing mat of evergreen foliage which is attractive on all varieties giving year round interest and texture long after the flowers have finished. Some varieties have coloured or textured foliage which is often at its best during the colder winter months making these true all year interest ground cover plants.
For best results with Ajuga, plant in sun or partial shade but do avoid very dry conditions, these ground hugging gems do prefer a little moisture where they will give many years of low maintenance gardening pleasure.
As a rough guide planting Ajuga as ground cover – 4 plants per square metre is adequate with a little patience, 6 will give better coverage and 9-12 will make a weed supressing carpet very quickly.
