Geranium Brookside (Cranesbill)
From June to September Geranium Brookside ground cover has beautiful large deep blue, saucer-shaped flowers with distinctive white centres borne on slightly longer stems than some other varieties, rising from deeply divided mid-green leaves. It’s excellent for suppressing weeds at the front of a mixed or herbaceous border or as part of a blue colour-themed scheme. The fantastic thing about Geraniums is the length of time they are in bloom! Flowering from June until the first frosts. Much loved by bees and other pollinators.
These are vigorous plants with a self-branching habit and tolerate heat better when in part shade. They make superb ground cover but are equally happy in pots, troughs or tubs. They could even be used in hanging baskets so are very versatile. Perfect for planting in rose gardens, in perennial borders in cottage gardens (more especially because they will not be troubled by rabbits, slugs and snails). Try planting in front of a mixed border of Nepeta, Lychnis and Peonies for a colourful display over many months.

Super low maintenance, as a ground cover plant Geranium Brookside will tolerate any soil other than waterlogged areas and prefers sunny areas although it will be happy in partial shade. The flowers which have their first and biggest flush in June will then be intermittent until autumn, especially if dead-headed, and it is always advisable to rejuvenate the plants by picking out dead foliage and splitting the clumps in spring if they are getting too large.
As a rough guide when planting Geranium Brookside as ground cover – 4 plants per square metre is adequate with a little patience, 6 will give better coverage, and 9-12 will make a weed supressing carpet very quickly.
