Compare types of Lavender to help you choose the right variety.
Lavender plants are an indispensable ingredient of many traditional cottage gardens and are the most popular flowering hedge plants that we sell. These beautiful aromatic shrubs always please with their upright flower spikes appearing during the Summer acting as a magnet for bees and butterflies.

We grow a good selection of the most reliable and hardy Lavender varieties, although we are a specialist hedging plant nursery all these Lavender plants are of course perfect for general planting in the garden as well as being eminently suited to hedging purposes.

Lavender plants look very effective in groups and the different varieties and flower colours never look out of place when put together in any combination, by planting a selection of different varieties it is possible to have a succession of Lavender plants in flower from late Spring right through until Autumn.
Types of Lavender shrubs and hedging plants.
French Lavender (Lavandula stoechas ‘Papillon’) has very distinctive rose purple flower bracts that sit on top of the flower heads, these are the earliest flowering Lavenders producing a magnificent display from late Spring onwards, often with another flush later in the season, especially if deadheaded when the first flowers fade.

Grosso Lavender (Lavandula intermedia ‘Grosso’) is a later flowering ‘intermedia’ type and very profuse in its flowering. Highly scented blue-purple flowers appear from July onwards on decorative slender stems. This is a robust and hardy plant, the variety most commonly used for commercial Lavender oil production.

Hidcote Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia ‘Hidcote’) is the most popular variety on account of its highly scented rich dark purple-violet flowers borne on a well-mannered and compact plant, growing to no more than 60cm including the flower stems. Perfect for low hedges and edgings or infilling around the Roses in a sunny bed.

Munstead Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia ‘Munstead’) is a compact variety of English Lavender with lighter mid-blue flowers appearing from June onwards above aromatic grey-green foliage. Like ‘Hidcote’ it will grow to around 60cm in flower.

Provence Blue Lavender (Lavandula intermedia ‘Provence Blue’) probably needs little introduction as this is the variety extensively planted in the Lavender fields of southern France. Highly scented deep blue flowers are held on strong wiry stems above robust grey green foliage.

Vera Lavender (Lavandula intermedia ‘Vera’) is the tallest of our Lavender plants. Also called the ‘True Lavender’ or ‘Dutch’ Lavender it has beautiful silvery foliage contrasting with dusky mauve-purple flowering appearing in succession from July until as late as October.
