These are a delightful group of slow growing shrubs grown for their flowers that all carry a sweet and intoxicating scent that will fill the garden.
We stock the evergreen Winter Daphnes (Daphne odora and Daphne odora Aureovariegata) that flower from January to March and bring welcome cheer to the short winter days. The newer transatlantica varieties are semi evergreen and have been developed to flower on the new (current seasons) wood and so they flower all season from Spring until Autumn.
Daphne like a warm and protected spot in the garden to thrive, they are slow growing but well worth persevering with. Plant them in a mixed border or close to a door or patio where the beautiful scent of their flowers can be enjoyed.
These delightful slow growing shrubs will succeed in full sun or partial shade, they prefer well drained humus rich soil that has had plenty of organic matter added and well mixed before planting.
Daphne is not a tough or hardy shrub but are well worth persevering with for their intoxicating scent that fills the garden, it’s important to choose a warm and sheltered spot and avoid hard pruning. Instead this should be limited to the bare minimum, just a light trim here and there to maintain a nice shape and remove any damaged branches.
