FLOWERING ASH, FRAXINUS ORNUS-MANNA ASH

The Flowering Ash (Fraxinus ornus) is an attractive and easily grown bushy round headed tree growing up to 50ft (15m). The buds of the Manna Ash are a rusty brown colour with a dense bloom of grey hairs and can easily be distinguished from the jet black buds of the Common Ash (Link ash hedging section). The name Manna Ash is derived from the blue-green sugary sap that can be tapped from the tree, this may be evaporated to form Manna-a sweet acidic solid with medicinal properties.

The dark green leaves of the Flowering Ash appear in late spring, they may be up to 12 inches (30cm) long and are composed of up to 9 wavy edged leaflets which turn to rich hues of red and purple during the autumn. In late spring and early summer the Flowering Ash (Fraxinus ornus) will be smothered in gently fragrant creamy white flower panicles which have a pleasant scent of hay.

As with all Ash trees (link- www.hgn/ash) the Flowering Ash is a fairly hungry surface rooting tree preferring a rich fertile soil but will be quite at home in any reasonable soil (including chalk) in full sun. This versatile tree will tolerate exposed inland and coastal sites, pollution and is relatively free from pests & diseases.

All plants are covered by our guarantee and we will supply full cultural instructions with your order. We strongly recommend Rootgrow and Bonemeal to help establish newly planted trees, these may found on the left hand menu.
