Chaenomeles Jet Trail (Chaenomeles X superba Jet Trail) Ornamental or Flowering quince
A magnificent cultivar of Flowering Quince, Chaenomeles Jet Trail is a thorny deciduous shrub bringing a welcome splash of early Spring colour with its profusion of pure white, yellow centred flowers appearing from March onwards. The flowers appear before the leaves on the bare twiggy branches, the green foliage emerges part way through the flower display which continues until May. Later in the season further interest is given by the developing greenish-yellow quinces which are mature by Autumn. (The quince fruits are edible after cooking and may be used in jellies and other preserves).
Chaenomeles Jet Trail is a very easy shrub to grow, being tolerant of most situations from full sun to partial shade (although this versatile plant will grow in denser shade its not at its best with few flowers). Grow them as shrubs in a mixed border or if space is short they look great trained against a wall of any aspect. Growth is vigorous and bushy, ultimately making a shrub of 1 metre high and wider than it is tall.
Chaenomeles Jet Trail also makes a striking spring flowering hedge, by setting them at 3-4 plants per metre they should develop into a hedge of 80-100cm high within a few seasons making an effective low prickly barrier to stop unwanted visitors from entering your property. You could also plant these as thorny yet attractive ground cover using 3-4 plants per square metre.
Whether you grow Chaenomeles Jet Trail as a shrub or a hedge, they need little maintenance, any reasonable soil is more than adequate for them. Any trimming or pruning required is best carried out immediatly after flowering to allow new growth time to ripen and bear next years flowers.
