Chaenomeles Red Trail (Chaenomeles X superba Red Trail) Ornamental or Flowering Quince
A versatile and accommodating deciduous shrub growing into a dense bush with many prickly, twiggy stems. Each Spring the bare branches are clothed with bright red, yellow centred flowers from March onwards, the flowers continue until May by which time the dark green leaves have unfurled. Later in the season the fragrant green-yellow quince fruits develop and become more conspicuous giving further interest. They are ready for picking by Autumn and have many culinary uses (although they need to be cooked first).
Flowering Quince is an easy shrub to grow, apart from a dislike of wet soil/ bad drainage they will grow just about anywhere from full sun to shade. The young plants develop quickly once established making a plant around a metre tall. They look good in flowerbeds bringing early season colour (especially if underplanted with Spring flowering bulbs), and as a wall shrub when trained with supports which is a good way to save space. They will grow well on a wall of any aspect.
Chaenomeles Red Trail also makes a good dense flowering hedge. By planting 3-4 plants per metre its possible to grow a dense and prickly hedge that should attain 80-100cm in height.
